LTD001: SQUANTO - SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE VOLUMES I & II

LTD002: SQUANTO - SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE VOLUMES III & IV

These tapes comprise the four volumes of Saturday Night Live, a series of recordings named after the nights during and styles in which they were made. Improvised and recorded live late at night over a series of Saturdays in January/February 2011, during a break from working on the second Squanto album, this music comes from a much different region of the uh…Squantosphere. Originally only released digitally and without any proper artwork, I’m proud to finally give these recordings a proper physical release.

Four side-long meditations for guitar, voice, and loop pedal (with some keyboard maybe), split into two parts each. The slow-burning and inwardly focused sound of spending every weekend holed up in a dorm room.

The first two official releases from Lily Tapes and Discs. Released in editions of 85 pro-dubbed chrome tapes each from National Audio Company, the best of the best. Volumes I-II on a white cassette with blue imprinting, and Volumes III-IV on a blue tape with white imprinting. Packaged with full-color inserts, numbered, cut, and folded by hand here at LTD headquarters/my parents’ house.

They’re done, and I’ve finally got proof! I’ve grown really fond of these recordings in the year since I made them, and I’ve put a lot of time and effort into making these tapes look and sound as good as they deserve, so I’d love it if you checked them out. The tapes are available together or separately, and as always the downloads are pay-what-you-want. Thanks again so much to everyone who helped make this happen with the kickstarter and whatnot. I’m really proud of and excited about the way these came out.

LTD000: SQUANTO - LIVE AT THE SEALAB 10/15/2011
A recording of a Squanto show, played in Rochester in my friend’s attic on Saturday, 10/15/2011. Great American Thunder Bison and Ligaments also played, and Sean from Great American Thunder Bison played drums on the last track. We used all sorts of fancy microphones and other gear that we borrowed from the school radio station to record this, so it sounds way better than a recording of a house show has any right to. Four songs in fifty minutes. When I play live I do things kind of differently than I do on my recordings so I think it’s pretty cool to have this available also.
The photo used for the cover was taken at a different show in Geneseo, NY on December 11th, 2010, which was actually the first show I ever played. This recording was the fourth show I played. As of now I’ve done five shows. Hopefully the sixth will be soon?
Released digitally in December 2011. Click the cover, title, or here to stream/download.

anyone know anything about it? I feel like there are a decent amount of arts/design people in the area that I follow/interact with here so hopefully this won’t be too tough. I know that this stuff is around but I don’t really have any leads to follow.

I’m working on making some fancy tapes of some music I made this past year (with this kickstarter thing) and originally I was going to get the inserts printed by the same company that’s going to be dubbing the tapes, but I’ve heard some iffy things about the quality of their printing and the type of paper that they use (heard nothing but great things about their tapes though!). I’d like them to be as nice as possible (and after making two albums with handmade artwork, I’d like to try my hand at doing it a bit differently), so I’m thinking I’d like to do the artwork separately and focus on making it look and feel as good as possible. an opportunity to support local business is cool too.

so basically does anyone know about printing in rochester, and where might be a good place to get somewhere between 50 and 100 cassette inserts printed? places with friendly people are a plus. or any other helpful information is great too.

I still won’t be getting the stuff printed for at least another month or two (plus I have to actually make the artwork first) (and also raise the dough) but any information I can get together on this stuff to help get it done later would be awesome. thanks!!

I guess now’s as good a time as any, since it’s a cold rainy day and the actual CD-Rs will be ready in a day or two. On Being Lumpy is the second proper Squanto album, after Go Go Gadget Grass Stains in 2009. I recorded it mostly in my dorm room at school and some of it back home between October 2010 and June 2011, though the bulk of it was during that winter. You can click the picture or here to get to my bandcamp page, where you can stream it, download it, or order a physical copy. The download is pay-what-you-want, including free, so have at it I guess. You can also stream it on my soundcloud page if you prefer that for whatever reason. The CD-Rs come in handmade cases and should be ready to ship in a few days - there’s more info about them on the bandcamp page.
I’m also working with a few friends right now on planning a show for sometime within the next month or two, and I’ll have copies with me then if you’re in Rochester and want to save on shipping and all that.
Special thanks to Sean for playing drums on “The View From There” and for letting me play his drums myself on “For a While,” Grayson for teaching me how to use Ableton Live (which has totally changed the way I think about making music), Laura for teaching me how to cut linoleum and lending me her knives, and the ER staff at Strong Memorial Hospital for giving me stitches when I stabbed myself in the hand by accident while I was cutting linoleum to make the cover. Also all of the cool people I’ve met this past year at shows and stuff, who have all been really awesome and encouraging.
I’ve spent a lot of time working on this album and if it’s alright to toot my own horn a bit I’m really proud of the way it’s turned out and super excited to share it. So yeah, check it out and spread it around if you like it and all that, and sorry this is such a long post and everything. Thanks!

SO, I’m currently a student at University of Rochester, and I’m pretty heavily involved at the school radio station. A few weeks ago I was talking with some of my friends from the station and we realized that a lot of us made our own music and wanted to work on finding a way to share the stuff we make with other people from the station and the campus community in general but without exactly being tied to the school (which already has its own concerts and activities board which apparently for some reason has held a grudge against WRUR for a few years).

Basically we want to start hosting dingy house shows where we can hang out, play for each other, get filthy, etc., which is kind of a hard thing to find/introduce at a fancy private school with little to no support or enthusiasm for that sort of thing coming from the student body, at least in any easily discernible way. And maybe eventually we could turn it into a regular series of things and start bringing in outside bands from elsewhere in the area or even from outside of Rochester. Basically I guess I’m just trying to copy what my sister did when she was in college?

We have a handful of people from the station who will be living off campus next year and have said they’d be willing to host shows and stuff, but what I want to know, people of western NY, is a) are there resources available for trying to put this sort of network or whatever you want to call it together? b) are there already organizations in Rochester putting on house shows and things? c) if so, are there people out there for us to get in touch with if we want to maybe try and contribute/become part of whatever house show culture there might already be in Rochester?

Any advice or anything else that might help would be greatly appreciated, and if you want to get in touch with me you can either put stuff in my ask box or whatever or you can email me, blovell “at” u.rochester.edu is the address. Thanks!
